Warsaw Metro Extension Funding Approved by Council

Eden Schmidt · 2 September 2026

The Warsaw City Council has approved a major funding package for extending the metro network, advancing the Metropolitan Transportation Hub's connectivity goals. The vote passed with strong support after extensive review of urban mobility needs and infrastructure priorities.

Funding Details and Timeline

The package allocates 1.2 billion zlotys across five years for three new stations and a 4.5-kilometer M2 line extension. Construction is slated to start next spring and finish by 2028. Planners confirmed seamless integration with existing hubs to boost overall metropolitan access. Councilors noted job creation during building and completed environmental reviews to limit ecological effects.

Procurement will follow strict oversight to control costs. Additional EU grants may supplement the budget based on sustainability metrics.

Expected Benefits for Residents

The extension should cut commute times for 150,000 daily riders and lower emissions by shifting trips from cars. Districts along the route will gain better links to central Warsaw, supporting local businesses through higher foot traffic. Public input sessions are planned to refine station designs and routes.

Officials stressed transparency and alignment with EU urban development targets. Long-term economic gains include reduced congestion and improved regional links within the transportation hub system.
